WERNER MÜLLER UND SEIN ORCHESTER, Adventures in Paradise, 1961

Werner Müller recorded a whole LP of the same title. “Hawaiian Swing” is quite similar to what Martin Denny was doing, but this exotica music was made right here in Berlin. This is a six-song EP.

DIE TAHITI TAMOURÈS, Tahiti Mafatu, 1963

tahiti-mafatu-fronttahiti-mafatu-backtahiti-mafatu-labelLast week the mysterious OSTBERLIN BEATET BESSERES blog posted a flexi disc by Berlin`s  60`s pop star Manuela.manuela

Initially I had the idea to answer that and checked wikipedia. That`s when I found out that Manuela had played in what was supposedly the first German all-girl band The Tahiti Tamourès.

It`s so cold and grey outside right now, why not go on a little trip to the warmer regions, at least musically. This Hawaiian music was made  right here in Berlin some 45 years ago. Manuela the lead singer grew up in the working class district of Wedding  and was discovered by Christian Bruhn and Will Meisel. The “Tahiti Tamourès” hit with “Wini Wini” in 1963. This was the follow-up record.

CATERINA VALENTE, Hawaiiana Melodie, 1963

hawaiiana-fronthawaiiana-backhawaiiana-labelThis Hawaiian record even had “Music made in Berlin” written on the sleeve.  Caterina Valente was the most popular artist in Germany in  the 50s and 60s.

PAUL KUHN, Eltibadabo Puka Puka, 1959

More Hawaiian music from Berlin. Paul Kuhn wasn`t  born in Berlin but he is a Berliner. He recorded some cool Rock`n`Roll records in the 50`s and had a long career in German Pop music. At 80 he is still playing Jazz today.

SPEEDY GONZALES AND HIS HOOLA HOOPERS, Dreamboat of love, 1959

A German Polydor release but I don`t know anything about this. “Dreamboat” sounds like Sheb Wooley. Hawaiian Rock`n`Roll and a goofy clarinet…

DIE VALENTINOS, Hawaiiana, 1962

Okay, this is not Rock`n`Roll. Most Hawaiian music was as far removed from Rock`n`Roll as Polka music but then again there must be some rockin` Polkas. So considering this, the Valentinos`  “Hawaiiana” is pretty rockin`…

These photos are from the pin-up magazine TOP FIT #14 from the early 60`s published in Berlin-Wannsee. This was their special “Tropenzauber” ( tropical magic ) edition.

DIE HULA HAWAIIANS, Hawaiian Bells, 1961

hawaiian-bellsThe Hula Hawaiians were a little more up-beat than most German Hawaiian bands. Maybe because they were from Switzerland. On the budget label Elite.
